Painting Fundamentals

In this course, students will go through a series of projects to develop the fundamental skills for creating successful paintings. We will complete three paintings using still life as a starting point for learning concepts applicable to all areas of painting. The first project will use a limited color palette and we will slowly expand to a full color palette as students gain confidence.

A strong emphasis will be on light-structure and color theory, and how you can use light and color to convey depth and form. This will be broken down into manageable steps for beginning painters or as a refresher for intermediate painters, and each project will build off the lessons of the last.

Students will also learn about rendering, mark-making, paint layering and composition.

By the end of the course, students will complete 3 still-life paintings and have a thorough understanding of how to use the materials and understand the building blocks for successful painting.

The instructor will give demonstrations in class to show various techniques, and give constructive feedback on a one-on-one basis with each student as they develop their artwork.
