Mixed-Media Painting Techniques

In this course, we will explore mixed-media approaches to painting as we experiment with a combination of materials. Students will be challenged to broaden their approach to art making, let go of perfectionism and allow themselves freedom for creativity and experimentation.

While some basic painting experience is recommended, this course is open to a wide range of experience levels as the subject matter of the main project can be simplified for beginners or more complex for intermediate and advanced students.

The materials included in this course include collage, markers, paint (acrylic and/or oil), additives to affect texture, encaustic (wax) and textiles. Students are free to decide how many of these materials they will include in their paintings.

We will complete two paintings during this course:

  • A quick practice painting at the start of the course to focus on learning how to use the materials and experimenting with techniques.

  • The majority of the course will be focused on a main painting project. As the focus of the course is experimenting with mixed-media, the subject matter for the main painting will be open to the choice of each student according to their skill level and preferences. However, those who don’t have a specific subject matter in mind and prefer more direction can be given a project prompt.

By the end of this course, students will have expanded their technical knowledge of painting regarding color theory, light structure, composition, mark-making, etc. while also exploring mixed media techniques and how to express ideas and emotions with visual language. The instructor will demonstrate techniques and complete a painting alongside the students, and students will receive one-on-one feedback throughout the course.
